135.....47.....BLACKSMITH MAKER: A BLACKSMITH made TRACK or RUT iron circa 1820-50 with a small head and five and one-quarter inch long hosel that was actually longer before the nicking was sawed off. (On early blacksmith made clubs the heavy nicking was hammered down to secure the shaft before the use of a hosel pin. The tradition was carried on throughout the feather ball era even after adding a pin was common practice. As a result, when a broken shaft was removed from the hosel, the repairman had to trim away the nicking in order to remove the shaft. Therefore, this hosel has no nicking remaining). The hosel, at its widest circumference, is 30-35% larger than the "rut" irons from the gutta percha era. It also flattens out and is elliptical in shape where it joins the back of the head. The length, circumference and flattened area of the hosel scream pre-1860 and most certainly modestly shouts 1820-1850. I have seen about a dozen examples touted by their owners and auctioneers as being late 18th Century-early ninteenth Century similar to this one. This is an exceptional example as it has a minimal number of face and hosel rock dings. A period type replacement shaft sports a nice sheep skin grip with old listing visible at the top. A worthy example for the most advanced collection. A rut iron of similar age was estimated at £7,000-10000 ($10,500-15,000 before commissions) at a recent auction. G-7++ $5500

135.....110.....DUNN BROTHERS, BOURNEMOUTH: A RARE ONE-PIECE Driver stamped "Dunn's Patent" in block lettering on the head. Much more significant than Spalding, MacGregor or BGI one-piece woods as this was the earliest example and made where the concept was conceived, Bournmouth, England. Jeff Ellis writes, TCA P-146-148: "...Dunn's Patent driver on P-146 is one of the clubs patented by John D Dunn and marketed by him and his father...Few one-piece woods made by Dunn and marked with his name remain today". This example is not the golden color as photoed; it does, however, have the full leather face which is a bit weathered. The grip is a replacement. G-6+ $2350
