These bandings are cut from a solid piece of amazing sapele with a pomelle figure. I found this piece about two years ago and have been drying it carefully. Now it has been cut into some beautifully figured bands. Sapele is similar in color, hardness and texture to mahogany, but is in fact not related. It darkens significantly once finished, and has a rich red-brown color. It will readily take stains and dyes, but I like it natural as shown in the photos.
